Out of all the holidays in the year, New Year’s Eve is the loudest and most celebrated of all. Spanning countries and cultures, each city has its own way of ushering in the new year. Here are our top picks for the best cities to celebrate.

As one of the first cities in the world to enter the new year, Sydney constantly sets the bar high for celebrations across the world. As the whole city gears up to celebrate, you’ll find indigenous smoking ceremonies, mini-light shows, and boat parades. Cruise along Sydney Harbour, and see the city come to life with a brilliant light show before Sydney sets its sky ablaze with an incredible fireworks display.

At the City of Lights, thousands gather to witness the Eiffel Tower explore into light as fireworks burst from the Parisian symbol to usher in the new year. The night is full of music and dancing, as Parisians and travelers celebrate all over the city with Champagne bottles in hand. But if you’re looking for a quieter place to share that New Year’s kiss, take a romantic boat ride and cruise along the Seine, where you’ll see the fireworks reflect magnificently on the river.

London, England

Milk the New Year’s celebration down to the last second when you head to London. Three hours before midnight, the city comes alive as residents and some 10,000 performers sing along to “Auld Lang Syne,” before gathering at the banks of the River Thames. There, you’ll witness a spectacular light show as Big Ben chimes in the New Year. Of course, for a truly unique view, take a ride on the famous London Eye. When you wake up the next morning, head out into the streets to witness the London’s New Year’s Day Parade.

Tokyo, Japan

For health and happiness, feast on a piping bowl of buckwheat noodles and listen to the temple bells ringing. Known as Joya No Kane, the Japanese-Buddhist tradition of ringing temple bells 108 times is said to banish evil passions and desires so we can begin the new year cleansed and renewed. Visit a temple to ring a bell and make a wish. And if you can, linger on until January 2 and visit the Imperial Palace—only one of the two days a year the Emperor opens the grounds to the public.

Rio, Brazil

For the best New Year’s Party, head to Rio. On December 31, its famous Copacabana Beach is filled with loud music, colorful costumes, live performances and attractions, and wild events that make for the world’s biggest beach party. For good fortune, come dressed in white and toss flowers into ocean as an offering to Yemanja, the Goddess of the Sea. Afterwards, drink and dance the night away, but pause to see the small fleet of boats set off incredible fireworks over the ocean.

New York City, New York

Last, but definitely not the least: New York City. The city that never sleeps is an exciting place year-round with over 80 attractions to see, but it pulls all the stops on December 31 with its blazing neon lights, fireworks, and of course: the crystal ball drop. For over 100 years, millions have elbowed their way past the crowds of Broadway and Seventh Avenue to see the Waterford crystal LED ball drop to usher in the new year. Don’t settle for the live stream this year, and experience one of America’s favorite traditions yourself.

Spice Up Your Solo Trip with a Helicopter Ride!

Everyone who has been to New York loves it there and trust us, you’ll be no exception too! But have you ever wondered what’s something you MUST do as a solo-traveller in New York in this concrete jungle? That is it! Hop on the helicopter for a bird’s eye view of the Big Apple and cruise the skyline.

To get to the departure point at Downtown Manhattan Heliport, take a 5-minute walk along the river after taking a subway to South Ferry Loop. Hop on a helicopter for a breathtaking aerial eye view of the famous Hudson River, Statue of Liberty and the Central Park. The sensational ride will last 12 to 15 minutes.

Once you’re there, you’ll have to make a payment of US$41 (~SGD 57) which includes insurance and a locker. Bags are not allowed for this activity so be sure to leave your belongings in the locker. Psssst, if you would like to get a window seat on the helicopter, make sure you are either first or last in line.

Once you’re inside the helicopter, the staff will help you with the seat belt and you will be able to communicate with the pilot. However, the propeller of the helicopter is deafening so keep your earmuffs on and be prepared for the loud noises throughout the flight.

The helicopter ride may last for just 15 minutes but it is worth the price because you’ll remember this experience to see New York from high above for a lifetime opportunity! unless you have acrophobia, you should totally go for it!

3 Best Spots Around the World to Have a Picnic

The Best Places Around The World For A Picnic (Tumblr)

Today, picnic is a way for us to get closer to nature and spend time with our family during good weather but did you know that picnics were strictly royal social activities in Europe during the 18th century? There were even waiters laying elegant tableware during those outdoor dining occasions!

Overtime, people became more creative with their picnics. You can now have a picnic anywhere—by the beach, in the mountains, by the waterfall or even up in a tree! Here we have 3 best and unique spots around the world for you to have an impressive picnic.

1. Outdoor movie + car + snacks = drive-in theatre

Drive-in theatre (Thomas Hawk)

If you are a big fan of retro designs, you’ll surely be impressed by this drive-in theatre! In New Jersey 1933, a man named Hollingshead set up a projector in his car and nailed a screen in his backyard, forming the idea of a drive-in theatre.

The concept of drive-in theatre became a big trend from 1950s to 1960s and you could easily find large parking venues with outdoor screens structure together with food vendors that sold snacks, making the drive-in theatres comfy. Not only that, certain drive-in theatres had picnic tables set up as well as a playground and programs for children.

Later, as the popularity of coloured television soared, drive-in theatres became a dying trend and was eventually replaced by flea markets. However, there are still few places with drive-in theatres, especially in New York City. When visiting drive-in theatres, remember to bring along snacks and drinks to relive the good ol’ days!

If you are around NYC, end your trip in a unique manner with a helicopter tour of New York; this earns you endless bragging rights when you return to Singapore!

Whether you are there as a couple or family, the experience of sitting in the sea, enjoying beautiful views and traditional dishes, fresh local fruits, vegetables and some wine is definitely one you can never forget!

Both Japanese and tourists alike gather under the cherry blossom trees yearly to eat and enjoy the beautiful sight. Bring your family here during the end of March to the start of May, the best timing of the year, to witness the cherry blossom!

Nights with cherry blossoms, known as Yozakura, are special as well. During this time, locals will hang paper lanterns on the trees and set up tables outside to have romantic dinners in their kimonos under the blossom trees.
